101.7 fnx has been ad free since... well, i don't remember when it started. the whole promotion ends on july 4th and was brought to us by snapple - they play a bunch of songs, then do a little bump with something snapple related in it, and then play a bunch of songs. the djs were pretty hands off before, but now they get to be totally hands off, with only the morning guy having a real presence.
the system is awesome. first, i don't plug in my ipod in the car nearly as much now. second, the djs can do what they want, which is spin tracks. third, i get to hear stuff on fnx that i thought was off radio forever - they reach for the obscure because they have that much more airtime now.
kudos to fnx for making this happen. i only wish it was the standard - make commercial radio more like soccer (how timely of me, a soccer reference the day before the world cup) - throw in ads once in a while, and really, really briefly. maybe each day of the week can be brought to us by a different corporate sponsor? i dunno; the bottom line is the system rules and it has made, for me at least, radio relevant again.
